  1. My project has further expanded my understanding of the difficulties of life. I started this project with a large passion for the deaf community and with the understanding that they do not have all the same enjoyments in life as hearing people. So if my efforts to understand more with the research required for this project I learned more how frustrating it can be for deaf people. The agitation of just not being able to always communicate with other people, especially for a child. Image being a child watching other children laugh and smile at a toy that sings, makes action noises and not being able to hear it for yourself. It has made me want to do more and get involved more. I definitely enjoyed learning more about this issue and trying my hardest to do something to help. Even though I did not get a lot of donations it's the knowledge that counts. I hope to do as much as I can in related issues like this later in life.

    1. That's really incredible that you say that about deaf children! I actually babysit a deaf and autistic child for about 6 years now. I've watched him grow up and he was diagnosed deaf around 2 years old. Ever since then he has had behavioral issues, due to the fact that he gets so frustrated because he can't communicate! We've literally tried every way to help him (give him a picture book, an ipad that has a picture app, sign language, etc). It's so sad that he gets so frustrated because he can't get what he wants.

    2. I think you had a great idea for your project. I feel like no one else would've thought to do this which is great because the foundation was probably so thankful! It's awesome how you wanted to go up to that girl and do sign language. That shows that you are passionate about this cause. I am also really jealous you know sign language because I forgot all the sign I learned. Although you didn't collect as much as you wanted I'm sure everyone was grateful you made an effort and were very into what you were doing.

    3. Before you presented infront of the class I didnt know who you were, anything you were passionate about, etc. Hearing you talk about your fundraiser and how you care so much about these children really helped show me who you were. You are so passionate about this and so passionate about helping these kids and making a difference that you can definitely tell you are such a kind-hearted, caring person. If i wouldve known about what you were doing I would have definitely tried to donate. You said you wanted to pursue a future in helping deaf children and I wish you all the best of luck I think you will be amazing at it!

    4. I really loved your project CJ! Before you did your presentation I had never even thought of how special needs children require different toys than other children to stimulate their sense. It's really cool that you can sign and you have a cause you're passionate about.

    5. CJ,
Your passion for this cause is truly admirable. Keep your passion alive and help bring awareness to the needs of those with hearing impairments. While you may have wanted more donations, you truly made a long-lasting impression on our class. Great job!

  2. My project has impacted me more than anything else. The fact that I addressed a huge issue, not just one that's in the world but in my own community is HUGE for me. Secondly, I got many volunteers who knew nothing about the issue, no one really knew how many people in the city of Poughkeepsie were living in substandard housing! When I showed pictures of the horrific living conditions and how there's overcrowding in the houses, people began to realize what they have and shared how lucky they are to be able to live in what they have. When we arrived at the build, it was amazing to see the reactions that people had. (The bullet holes in the windows, the second floor was barely being held up, the amount of holes in the floor, how small the bedrooms are, etc). I learned that we need to do stuff like this more often. Young adults should be seeing what's going on in their own community and doing something about it, like volunteering for Habitat for Humanity.

    1. Paige, your project is really awesome. Since I live in Poughkeepsie I am fully aware of the situation the city is in. Poverty is definitely a huge issue here and the living conditions are really sad for a lot of people. I think your project is so inspirational because it's exactly what this city needs and it definitely is making a huge difference in the community!

    2. Paige,
You really did address a huge issue in the community. I think anytime young citizens can participate in a hands-on project they are able to truly feel like they made a difference (and are more likely to do it again). I think by offering more opportunities like this we can really get a core group of students to volunteer. Great job, I am really proud of you and all of the work that you put into your project.

  3. This project has impacted me a lot and there are many things I have learned from it. It has impacted me and what I do in my daily life. I have rearranged my schedule many times throughout the project and what I do in my daily life. This is because I have wanted to get the tasks that I needed to get completed. There were many tasks that I had to complete such as setting up meetings, checking the homeowner’s house I was doing work for, and also doing lots and lots of research. In having to do all of this research, I had to do all of this because with some of the things I had no idea of what I was doing. There were also many things I learned from when with this project. One of the main things I learned from this which is important to me was being able to see the reaction in someone else when you complete a good work of community service. It shows the other person that you are a true community leader. It gives them also the confidence and motivation so that you can help them in the future. Another aspect that I have learned from with this project was that by helping others is what brings about positive change in a community. If you can spend and donate your time to someone else then you will be considered a positive community leader. This is the key to success when dealing with a community issue. These are some of the reasons on how this project affected me and what some of the things I learned form it were.

    2. Andrew,
I am extremely proud of you and all of your efforts. I think you went above and beyond your "project" and truly made it your mission to not only complete your task at hand but complete it to a higher standard. You did an amazing job and I am sure the faces on the people that you helped is enough of a reward and a motivation to continue with such a project. Way to go buddy, I am extremely proud of you!

  4. Project Soccer Star has definitely impacted me. Honestly, I feel it helped me grow not only as a person, but as a leader. I have learned to be comfortable around new people. Between the various phone calls and meeting the parents at the game I think it helped me strengthen my social skills. This project has taught me to make the best of everything because some people have it worse than I do. The children were so happy with the simplest things and it was amazing seeing that. Not only did I teach them skills but the children taught me a lot about myself and just life in general. The game impacted me because I knew I made a difference. Everyone was so grateful of what I did, which made me feel proud. I learned that everyone can make a difference by doing the littlest things. My project took a lot of planning but after the day I realized that the kids would be happy with something simple. With that said anyone can make the difference. Anyone can plan events like this. It really does make an impact on the children and yourself. I am so thankful for what I have taken from this project and I hope I can help more throughout my life.

I am extremely proud of the time and effort you put into your project. You really worked hard to overcome obstacles and did not give up, seeing your project through to the very end. You really could see how much the soccer event meant to you, and when you presented it to the class (and other audience), once could see the immense pride you had immediately. Great job and I hope that you continue to help this group of students that you obviously care quite a bit about.

  6. This Project has impacted me because for starters this is the first time I have done something to help benefit people. Doing this Project has shown me there are so many issues going on in the community that we are not aware of. For my project when I went to the childrens home I did not realize how many children in our area alone were abused. The childrens home has two full size homes just to take care of the kids on the property. This showed me something has to be done to end the issue. I may have just been one person sitting raising money but what if we spread the Word and raise awareness there would be so many people to fight the cause. This project helped me grow because it makes you realize how good you have it in life and if we stand together and fight these kids could have the same.

I am so appreciative of your honesty and perspective on being thankful. I think the "lesson" that you were able to take from this project is a valuable one and I am sure that you will use it to help others in the future. Great job, I am proud of you and your efforts.

  7. My project has impacted me to try harder to make a different in a child life. Since no one came to my event that made me more determined to get my message out to people in my community. If we don't help this issue more and more kids will become more destructive and more disrespectful to others. Since we live in the age of technology and the world wide web kids can now be easily expose to the wrong information at anytime and anywhere. I would advise parents to watch over what their child is doing or watching and families need to learn more on how they can increase their communication between each other. Also parent need to learn how bring certain subject to their kid's attention in a way the kid know what is happening and how it might change their life. What I learned from this experience is that if you want people hear your message you have to go out of your way to spread the word and you have to learn how to talk to people in a certain in order for them to under stand your point of view. I think I still did a good job and hope i can do it again the future.

I do hope that you continue with your project in the future. As I have said before and I think you realize, your message is an important one that students can truly benefit from. I think using what you learned about persistence can take you far, whether it be with your project or with other tasks or goals. Good luck!

  8. This project really had opened my eyes. Before I did this project I never even knew about the children's home of poughkeepsie or that there was even a place like this in our community. Its such a good thing, they never turn anyone away and they give all that they have to the families and children placed in their care. When I found out all of the good that the Children's Home does I knew that this was the right place for me to donate. This project really showed me how easy it actually was to get out in your community and make a difference. Ive always wanted to do community service but never really know how to start. I think this project showed me how to be more caring and grateful for all of the things i have in life, and although it may seem like i may not have a lot at times, i know that there are people out there who have it alot worse than me. I cant imagine how these kids feel on a day to day basis, being put through fostercare or being neglected and abused, although i cant understand it really made me want to help in the best ways that i can. It made me want to become a better person and to always help out. I can definitely see myself doing donation drives like this again, this class and this project really impacted my life.

I am really happy that you did you first community service (and enjoyed it). I really think serving their community is something that many students want to do but really do not know how to get started. As your project showed, it is something that anyone can do. Know that as much as this project has impacted your life it has impacted mine as well. I am extremely proud of you and look forward to hearing more about how you serve your community!

  9. This project impacted me on several levels. It helped me first and foremost help our community with an issue that I saw as a major need. That not only gave me a personal connection but made me feel like I could actually make a difference in the world I see with my own eyes. It feels good when you know that your passions (mine being promoting a positive and healthy life style) can be channeled to help people. This project also showed me how much my involvement and future involvement is needed on the subject of childhood obesity and fast-food culture. Through the surveys and presentation I found that many if not all of the people had no idea where their food even comes from let alone what they were even eating !?!? It's clear that more work needs to be done, but through the experiences that I've had by doing this project I feel I am ready to find more ways to volunteer on this topic.

    2. Bob,
I think that your project was not only needed, it also showed you what you could do to help others, particularly on a topic that interests you. As a class, we could see how important this topic is to you and how your passion for the topic brought you through any obstacles that you encountered. You really kept pushing on and in the end created a wonderful project!

  10. This project has had both a short-term and long-term impact on me. During my project I had a blast judging and scoring the Scavenger Hunt. Seeing all of my closest friends get involved and do all kinds of things on the list for a good cause was very rewarding. It was also very nice to hear the feedback and hear my friends discuss how much fun they had. The experience of my event in general had a big, short-term impact on me because of it's success and seeing my hard work beforehand, pay off. Long term, my project taught me a lot. I discovered the value of making the best of everything. Raising money and organizing can be tedious and boring but I learned how you can make it into something enjoyable and fun. I know that this will have an impact on me in the future especially as I go off to college next year and begin to take on everything on my own.

I'm glad that you had such a positive experience with your project. As a person who is accustomed to various types of community service, I am glad that you were able to create your own form that you thoroughly enjoyed and could get your friends involved in. I think you did a great job and I know that you will continue to serve your community in the future.

  11. My project definitely had a strong and positive impact on me. Helping children in need has always been something I really cared strongly for. From my project I learned that you can make a difference in someone's life so easily. The little things can make such a big difference for someone. At first I was not sure how my project would turn out and whether it would go well or not, but I was pretty satisfied with the results. The children I mentored enjoyed the time we spent together and they were always eager for me to come spend time with them. It was honestly the cutest thing ever, seeing how they were so young but so appreciative and eager to participate in any activity really made my project worthwhile.

  12. My project opened my eyes to how things that seem insignificant can actually have a huge impact on everything. I learned that a simple insect will effect lots of different things if it becomes extinct (in this case the economy would plunder, we would lose 1/3 of our crops, farmers would be out of a job, and the food chain would be altered in such a way that everything else would have less to eat). It made me think of how any human being can make a change and effect people. One person has the power to help the community if they just put in effort. This is the most important lesson I took away from my project, and I'm glad that this is so.

  13. After doing this project, I realized how unaware children were of how unhealthy the things they ate were. I had kids asking me why certain foods and drinks weren’t healthy, and while it was so obvious to me, it wasn’t to them. Thirds graders actually thought that drinks like orange Capri Sun and Sunny D are the same as orange juice. They also thought that foods like chicken burgers from Wendy’s were healthy and they’re reasoning was that it’s healthy because it’s composed of bread, chicken, lettuce, and cheese and tomatoes; all healthy things. I think I was able to make an impact on them because they were really shocked when I revealed secrets behind their favorite foods. They ended asking me if there were healthier versions of certain foods and they asked me how to make certain foods healthier, implying that they would go home and try it. This project taught me that one person really can make a difference. At the beginning of this course when Ms. Bellino was trying to emphasize that one person can make change, I was thinking to myself “Wow, this cliché thing again” just because I literally have heard that line EVERYwhere but I’ve had yet to actually see one person make a difference, and by the end of the course I was the one that made the change. So that was a pretty memorable experience.

    2. Mahiya I think you had a great impact on the kids. I think you helped them open up to a lot of new healthy ideas. I also think it's good that you presented to a young group of kids because it's better to start kids off eating healthy while there young so if it's set in there head now they will continue it as they get older.

  14. This project has impacted me in many different ways. I have always wanted to create my own community service project but I never had the time and I didn't really know where to start. After completing my project I realized that it is possible for me to organize my own successful community service project and I look forward to doing more in the future. I am usually a pretty independent person who doesn't like to ask other people for help but with this project I quickly realized that if I was going to need a lot of help if I was ever going to finish on time. So this project allowed me to realize that it's okay to ask people for help when you really need it. Also, I had to learn how to sew on youtube in order to be able to complete my project so that is definitely a way my project affected me

  15. This project has impacted me in a couple of different ways. I love to be involved in my community and the fact that everyone is using more and more technology I thought that it would be a good idea to make the video. After completing my project I realize that this has been really helpful to the students who say it. It may not have had everything about the school on it but it was something that could wet their feet with. I feel that this is really something that other people can you and it feels good to have done this. I may not do another video to help my community in the future because of the difficulties I had. From this project I learned how hard it is to get other peoples schedules to match up with your own and the fact that technology is not my friend in any way at all. I had to learn how to record voices with the help from Tim and how to create a video from my brother. They both showed me that it was not that hard but it can be time consuming. I cannot wait to do my next community project in the future.
